Knowledge deepening about the energy source oil

This is a deepening post for our original post about oil.

Switzerland and its oil usage

Even though the Swiss are very eco-friendly and, accorind to a survey in 2018, about half of our population wants to become an oil-free county in the next 20 years. But, in Switzerland about half of the energy is produced by oil. So getting completely rid of it wouldn't be easy. 30% of this half is made up of the usage of petroleum fuels like heating oil, and the other 70% are regular fuels like petrol or diesel.
Switzerland imports about 80% of the oil from foreign countries, we are extremely dependent on our suppliers. In 2018 we imported approximitely three tons of oil. The three main suppliers are Nigeria, Lybia and Kazakhstan. More...

Oil as an energy source

Oil is a fossil energy carrier and it's non-renewable. In general, oil is a liquid that is made up of organic molecules. However, the world oil in the context of the energy sector is the liquid fossil fuel that is extracted from the ground. Roughly 1/3 of the world's primary energy comes from this primary fuel. One barrell of oil equals approximately 159 liters.

With these pumps the workers gain the oil from the underground. More...

My energy source - Oil heating system

My house was built in the 1970s so unfortunalety, we don't have renewable energy. We are heating with the oil heating system. Our heater / boiler was built in 1987 so it is quite old.

How it works: First you have to tell the thermostat what temperature you want your rooms to be. If the temperature drops below that, the heater kicks into action and starts to heat. Meanwhile, oil is pumped into a burner thorough a nozzle (Düse) where it converts (umwandeln) the flowing liquid into a spray. At the same time, air is mixed with the oil mist in a combustion chamber (Brennkammer) where it is ignited (entzündet). The heat then flows through a distribution system and the rooms get heaten. More...

- jobs
- tools you don't need everyday (ladder, lawn mower etc.)

Airplane Food facts (dontwastemy.energy)

I think this post is interesting because I usually fly a few times a year and i never really thought about where the food is coming from. It was quite nice to see how the food organisation on planes work. Also interesting that they gave advice on how to make less waste on planes or how the airlines could improve in this matter. More...
